REVIEWS

The Artist’s Promise is a genuinely collaborative effort of writers and artists. As such, the consistency of its presentation is awe-inspiring. The mood, the message, and the story all work together seamlessly to engage the reader with hypnotic fascination. While the storyline may seem deceptively simple—a donkey befriends a child artist who becomes famous—the narrative describing their friendship (and each other’s becoming an adult) lures the reader effortlessly but irresistibly. I found it impossible to stop turning the pages, beguiled equally by the story and its marvelous illustrations. - Joel R. Dennstedt

I love donkeys, I am an artist (oil painter), I love Clark Hulings work and his daughter who wrote this book...so I opened to page one already delighted. I thoroughly enjoyed this seemingly simple story that touches on deep truths. Being an artist is simple...but not easy. The observations throughout the book touched my heart and made me fall in love even more with life and the beauty that awaits us when we look. The illustrations are wonderful. - Blane Barber

I recently read The Artist’s Promise, a wonderful book by Elizabeth Hulings and Calvin Korpona. It is an ideal book for young ones that are ready to transition from picture books to stories that take a little longer attention span. It is poignant, in the way that it treats those aspects of growing up, that have to do with maturing to take on new responsibility, and to also take pride in work and a job well done. It also highlights the idea of seeing adults, beyond our parents, as positive role models, These adults are part of a larger community we learn from and should treat with respect. I also think the tie-in to Clark Hulings paintings is masterful. Creating a puzzle for older children, and adults, to associate the principles and learnings from the book to Clark Hulings paintings, broadens the appeal of the book to a larger audience. It is also a great marketing tie-in to James Balestrieri’s book on Clark Hulings, as that would be the ideal place to cross reference the carrots from The Artist’s Promise with Clark Hulings paintings. I had not ordered Balestrieri’s book yet, but now it is on order. I strongly recommend The Artist’s Promise. - Billy Pilgrim

I thought 'Platero y yo' was the only story inspired by a donkey and the joys if having it. Well, I was wrong. This is also a touching story about friendship, imagination, and creativity. It follows Bub, a young aspiring artist, and his loyal donkey, Sancho, whose support helps Bub overcome challenges. The tale remarks the power of dreams and the importance of staying true to one's passion, through beautiful illustrations and paced narrative. - Gisella Quintana

I read all the reviews and I think they all beautifully express and capture the experience I had reading the book. The richly illustrated cover and subsequent illustrations in the book might lead one to think it’s a book for children but such is not the case. Themes abound in this story about the friendship and bond that develops between a donkey and a boy as they grow and mature. Once I started to read the story, I couldn’t put the book down. Though I myself am not an artist, the book awakened in me the idea that we all have creative inclinations that can be manifested in many ways: and we can find it if we “slow down,” and like the book’s characters: Bub and Sancho, see the beauty of the world through the shared eyes of both humans and animals. - Mittie
